If you need a gift for a friend who has an extensive wine cellar, you may be a little afraid to buy them a bottle of wine. What if it isn’t a good wine and your lack of wine expertise is revealed? Making the wrong choice means that not only does your friend not get a gift they want, but it can mean not inconsiderable personal embarrassment as well, especially if the gift is to be given at a public gathering.
Consider instead a gift of wine accessories. That removes the pressure of choosing just the right wine, while acknowledging your friend’s passion for wine. It could be something as simple as a fancy corkscrew or something unusual that will catch everyone’s attention and be highly appreciated by the true wine aficionado.
Wine tends to age rather quickly once the bottle is opened and the wine is exposed to the air. The wine combines with oxygen and the taste is ruined. Wine stoppers placed back in the bottle if it is not going to be finished in one sitting, but still the bottle is half full of fresh, oxygenated air that will definitely affect the taste of the remaining wine and even the next day, the taste will be noticeably poorer. A wine preservation kit aims to prevent the wine from mixing with the air and preserve its delicate flavor for several days after it is opened.
There are several different types of wine preservation techniques and kits. The most simple, of course, is the wine stopper, a tapered cork designed to slide snugly into the neck of the bottle and preventing more air from entering. These can be decorative or whimsical in design, with a Christmas decoration on top, for example. These, mentioned above, are only minimally effective.
Next is the vacuum pump. These devices use a special stopper with a valve built in. A small pump is attached to the valve and the air is drawn out of the bottle. This method is more effective than a simple stopper, preserving a wine’s flavor for several days after it is opened.
One of the highest tech solutions to wine preservation is the use of a heavy inert gas as a barrier between the wine’s surface and the air. If a stopper is also used to prevent air turbulence from drawing the heavier gas out of the bottle, this method can be one of the most effective ways to keep an opened bottle of wine fresh and flavorful. The inert gas is sold in small handheld pressurized canisters that can be used for up to 100 bottles of wine before running out.
The next time the occasion calls for a wine related gift, don’t fret over choosing the right vintage. Choose a wine accessory like a preservation kit instead.
