Removing Relocation Distractions for a New Job

The best way to improve your performance at work is to remove distractions so that you can truly focus on the important matters at hand. This is especially true if you are starting a new job where you need to become acclimated to the roles and responsibilities that are expected of you from your new employer. Unfortunately, many times there are serious and complicated issues vying for your attention when we take a new job, especially if you had to relocate for the new position.
You can help minimize these distractions and increase your productivity during your first weeks at your new job, by negotiating for a good relocation package. Explain to your employer that you want to be focused on your new job and not worrying about finding temporary accommodations while you search for a permanent home in your new city. A savvy employer will recognize that it is in their own best interest to make sure that incoming employees have the help they need to get settled in properly.
Many employers will start the negotiation with an offer for reimbursement of your moving expenses and perhaps your living expenses for the first few months. This means that you still need to come into the strange city, and immediately find a place to stay that is not only close enough to your new job, but is also in a safe and comfortable neighborhood. You’ll also need to either buy and close on a house immediately, which is impractical if not impossible, or find a leased property that will rent to you on a month to month basis without a long term commitment. The pressure of finding such temporary housing under a severe time constraint can be daunting.
If you make a poor choice, then your pressures will only mount over time, increasingly distracting you from your new job. Not exactly the kind of first impression that you want to make a new company.
Many companies are now switching to corporate housing specialists for their relocation needs. These companies maintain an inventory of available furnished apartments specifically for relocating employees and those visiting on long term assignments away from home. The company provides them with the employee’s contact information and the corporate housing provider gets in touch with the employee, and makes all the arrangements for their temporary housing needs. A single invoice is sent monthly to the hiring company, obviating the need for tracking receipts and expenses for both the employee and the company. The corporate apartments are move-in ready and come complete with all utilities including phone and internet service, all arranged by the corporate housing provider.
If you are expecting to relocate, look into corporate housing providers in the area before you negotiate for your relocation package and then suggest one to your employer as a way for them to save time and manpower while providing top notch relocation services. It can be your first process improvement suggestion at your new company.
