Comfort your Aches and Pains

Memory foam mattresses are a recent addition to mattress retailers everywhere. Memory foam was initially designed by NASA to support and cradle the astronauts’ bodies during liftoff. Its properties were recognized by hospitals as a method of preventing pressure points that cause bed sores in patients who don’t move around frequently. Eventually, memory foam mattresses became available to everyone as an alternative to coil or spring mattresses.
Traditional mattresses have many coils of wire inside the mattress that push back against the parts of the body pressing against them, usually the hips and shoulders. Rather than contour around the body, the coils create pressure points which can cause back and neck pain. At the same time, traditional mattresses do nothing to contour the interior curves of the body such as the neck and waist which puts strain on the body’s muscles and tendons. This is often the cause of tossing and turning in one’s sleep as the body tries to find a comfortable position. Tossing and turning doesn’t allow for deep sleep which is needed for regeneration of brain cells. The lack of sleep can cause many ailments and the poor body support can cause chronic back and neck pain as well as headaches.
Memory foam, on the other hand, contours perfectly to each body as it responds to heat. Shoulders and hips generally press harder against the mattress and the heat causes the mattress to yield accordingly. All parts of the body are supported which allows the sleeper to get more and deeper sleep without all of the tossing and turning.
While memory foam mattresses are a wise investment for everyone who wants a better quality sleep, they can especially help those who already suffer chronic pain or even just the regular aches of the day. Because the memory foam doesn’t press back against parts of the body, it doesn’t worsen existing pain and can even help to relax the body and relieve some of the pain. This is especially true for those who suffer frequent headaches. A memory foam pillow contours to the shape of the neck, supporting both the neck and head perfectly. Muscles in the neck and face relax which can lessen and even eradicate headaches.
Not only is a memory foam mattress good for your body, it feels amazingly luxurious. Your body is immediately cradled by the mattress when you lay down and it feels like floating on water. This promotes deep relaxation which can reduce built-up stress. As stress is considered an important contributor to pain and disease, a memory foam mattress is both decadent and healthy.
The memory foam experience may be decadent but the cost is not. Quality memory foam mattresses have come down in price significantly in the past few years and are now on par with a quality coil or spring mattress. Once you try a memory foam mattress, you will never look at another old-fashioned mattress again.
