For treating headache pain caused by contracted muscles (tension headache), Fioricet is the choice of many physicians. It has also been used, although is not indicated for, migraine and other pain treatment. Fioricet is also referred to as “Butalbital with acetaminophen” or “Butalbital with acetaminophen and caffeine,” and is only available by prescription.
Fioricet is a combination of acetaminophen, Butalbital and caffeine. Each ingredient has a specific use in the treatment. Pain relief and fever reduction are provided by acetaminophen. Muscle contractions in the cerebral vascular system are relaxed by caffeine. In addition, caffeine increases blood flow to stimulate the central nervous system. Butalbital is a general depressant, a barbiturate that reduces and relaxes muscular contraction to relieve tension headaches. Fioricet is a very effective tension headache medication due to these three key ingredients. The simplest explanation is to say that Fioricet is a muscle relaxing pain reliever.
Normally prescribed for adults, Fioricet has been safely prescribed for children over 12. There is not, however, sufficient testing to suggest safe use for children under age 12.
As a barbiturate, Fioricet can cause physical or mental addiction after extended use. After extended use, the body may become tolerant at a particular dosage level and need a larger dose to remain effective. Always tell your doctor if Fioricet ceases to work for you as it is likely you have become tolerant and will need either a larger dose or another type of medication.
Use respect and care when using Fioricet. Take care to store it where children cannot reach it. Only the person the drug is prescribed for should take it. Never share it, and especially never share it with anyone with a history of addictions. Always take Fioricet as directed; never take larger or more frequent doses than prescribed. Liver damage is very possible when high amounts of acetaminophen are ingested. Take care to read the labels of any OTC medications before taking them with Fioricet. They may contain caffeine or acetaminophen that could be potentially harmful when taken in conjunction with the amounts in Fioricet and lead accidentally to an overdose. Do not drink alcohol when taking Fioricet as the risk of liver damage is compounded by the acetaminophen content in the Fioricet. If you are taking MAO inhibitors or have within the last 14 days, do not take Fioricet as lethal side effects can occur. Until all MAO inhibitors are eliminated from the body, do not take Fioricet.
Communicate openly with your physician as it is impossible for them to prescribe effectively and safely unless you do. If you have conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease, drug allergies, porphyria or any history of mental conditions or suicidal thoughts, it is critical that your doctor be made aware. Due to the risk for liver disease, those who imbibe more than three alcoholic beverages daily will rarely be prescribed Fioricet. Nursing mothers, pregnant women or those who are attempting to become pregnant should not take Fioricet.
In the event of uneven heart beat, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, bruising and bleeding, headache or anxiety, discontinue medication use and contact your doctor. Avoid driving and operating machinery until you are sure how your body will react due to the risk of extreme sleepiness.
Life is too short to be miserable; use Fioricet as directed to eliminate debilitating headaches and live a full, enjoyable life free of an aching head.
